“There is a state law and that's called move over and when we make a traffic stop, we have dual concerns,” Danos said. “When you gotta be distracted because you worry about drivers gonna hit you, that that's a secondary thought.”
Danos described rural traffic stops on county highways and interstates as especially hazardous and noted that some drivers pass at high speed as officers work. He encouraged drivers to slow down, move to the right when possible, and avoid distractions such as cell phones.
On the program’s lighter note of the week, Danos described a speeding stop that led to a citation. “Our stop of the week was a speeding vehicle,” he said, urging motorists to reduce speed and avoid accidents.
The sheriff tied crash trends in Cochise County and Sierra Vista to haste and distracted driving and asked residents to prioritize safety for motorists and first responders.
