Cochise County sheriff says detectives identified suspect in San Simon assault; suspect believed to have fled country

Sheriff Mark Danos told listeners that detectives investigating a February assault near the San Simon rest area on Interstate 10 have identified a potential suspect and are seeking his return to Cochise County for prosecution.
“My detectives … worked their tails off on this case to actually identify a potential suspect,” Danos said. “They went back east. They did search warrants with the law enforcement back east and they have identified a suspect.”
Danos said the victim remains gravely injured. “I mean, he’s in he’s in life support. It’s not a good situation,” Danos said, adding that investigators found the vehicle they believe the suspect used. According to Danos, the suspect is a 41‑year‑old man from Pennsylvania who fled the country after the incident.
The sheriff said Cochise County detectives coordinated with other jurisdictions to execute search warrants and are now working with INTERPOL to locate the man internationally. “We’re working with INTERPOL … and we’re trying to, we’re gonna locate this guy and we’re gonna bring him home for justice,” Danos said.
Danos described the case as complex because it occurred in a high‑traffic, transient corridor along I‑10 and involved multiple agencies. He offered condolences to the victim’s family and praised detective work that led to identifying a suspect. No arrest had been reported on the program.
The sheriff urged the public to report information to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office; he characterized the investigation as ongoing and said updates would come through the department’s media channels.
