Committee hears data on correction-officer double overtime as policy nears sunset

County staff told the Management and Budget Committee that double-time payments for correction officers in May totaled $31,007.38 and that cumulative double-time costs since Feb. 1 amount to $122,004.66. Staff said the double-time provision is scheduled to expire on July 31.
The presenter noted that Human Resources has reported the jail is now fully staffed and that, based on that report, the committee should consider stopping the double-time authorization immediately. "Based upon the HR report... I think we can have that policy stopped today," one committee member said, adding the department could return to the committee if staffing problems re-emerge.
Committee members discussed procedure for rescinding the earlier resolution that authorized the double-time payments. One member said a rescission would likely have to be done at the full board next week. Members asked Louie Alvarez, chair of public safety, to reach out to the sheriff’s department to notify them of the committee’s position following the HR report and budget figures.
No rescission occurred at the meeting; staff agreed to prepare a draft resolution to amend resolution 13-25 for consideration at the next executive/board meeting.
