DOC says Maya contract continues in option year and serves about 45 students monthly

Deputy Director Jacqueline Williams told the committee the education contract with Maya is currently in "option year 1" and that option year 2 will begin in November; there is no active solicitation because the contract is continuing under option. She said the contract serves "up to 45" students and that DOC has averaged "between 45 and 47 a month" for current months.
Why it matters: Education and individualized education program (IEP) supports affect residents'long-term educational and reentry prospects. Council members asked whether DOC provides IEP testing on-site; DOC responded that IEP determinations accompany students who enter and that adults without IEPs receive TABE testing to place them in appropriate adult-education levels.
What remains unresolved: Committee members requested continued clarity on contract transitions and on support services for residents who lack preexisting IEP documentation; DOC said it will continue partnering with the contracted provider and adapt capacity if population changes.
