County approves $10,000 for Fourth on Broadway after split vote; approves $2,000 for high-school mariachi programs

One commissioner opposed the appropriation, saying the city or nonprofit had not appeared in person to present the request and arguing for consistent presentation requirements. Court records show the City of Lubbock’s direct contribution to the parade budget is $40,500 of a $367,000 total; the remaining budget is from the nonprofit organizer and private sponsors, and security was shown in the backup as a $17,000 line item.
Separately, commissioners approved $1,000 each to the Coronado High School and Lubbock High School mariachi programs. Kimberly Gonzalez, mariachi director at Lubbock High School, described program growth across the district and said the programs support discipline, teamwork and cultural connection. Gonzalez told the court the programs help students from lower-income families by providing access to instruments, uniforms and travel support; she also noted both bands performed at the state competition this year.
Judge Parrish moved to fund each mariachi program $1,000; Commissioner Shaw seconded. The motion carried.
The Fourth on Broadway appropriation passed after a motion and a failed attempt to postpone the item. The transcript records the vote as 4 in favor, 1 opposed.
