Advisory commission presses county for shed repairs, roof fix and storage; Eagle Scout donation box proposal sent to commissioners

Commission members discussed facility repairs and related fundraising at the June 3 meeting of the Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission.

Members said a donated $5,000 sum remains available for shed materials but county maintenance has not completed the shed work. Dr. Don and other commissioners recommended soliciting local contractor bids and forwarding a request to county commissioners to have the work contracted rather than relying solely on county maintenance. "We might wanna ask the commissioners if they could bid it out somehow and get it done," Dr. Don said, noting maintenance crews are busy with other county work.

The commission raised a roof leak in the kennel area that occurs intermittently depending on wind and rain. Members said the leak had caused a moldy spot in the ceiling and asked that the problem be resolved. Cameras have been assessed by a vendor but installation remains pending; members said ceiling repairs should be completed as part of maintenance scheduling.

Separately, the commission said it has submitted an official request to hold a yard sale and is awaiting county approval before public advertising; approval was expected this week according to the minutes. Members discussed requesting a temporary storage unit again for yard-sale items if the shed remains unavailable.

The commission also reported sending information to county commissioners about a local Eagle Scout candidate who proposes to build a weather-resistant donation box outside the shelter for after-hours donations. Commissioners said past scout and volunteer projects have been successful and recommended approval by the county.

The shelter director and commission members thanked local donors and the Times News for recent coverage of shelter improvements. The state dog warden was scheduled to meet with the shelter after the commission meeting, according to the agenda.
