Advisory commission approves sending fenced dog play area proposal to commissioners; Eagle Scout donation box proposed

At its June 3 meeting in Bimthorpe, the Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission voted to forward a proposal to county commissioners to create a fenced, staff‑supervised outdoor play area for shelter dogs and discussed two fundraising and community projects: an Eagle Scout–led donation box and a requested yard sale awaiting county approval.

Commission members said the proposed play area would be sited adjacent to the memorial garden or on a nearby corner of county land and would be for shelter dogs only, not open to the public. Members noted the proposal intends to use donated funds to pay for construction and emphasized limiting access to staff and approved volunteers to address prior liability concerns.

The commission voted to sign and send the proposal to county commissioners for consideration. The move was presented as a formal recommendation to commissioners rather than a final appropriation; members said any construction and contracting would require county approval. The commission also said a local resident has requested approval for a yard sale to benefit the shelter and that officials have submitted the request; county approval is still pending, so the shelter has not begun advertising.

Commissioners reported they had sent materials to county commissioners supporting an Eagle Scout project to build a weatherproof donation box to accept after‑hours donations; the commission said similar scout projects in the past have benefited the shelter.
