The meeting opened with the director's monthly report. Tom, the shelter director, told commissioners the shelter had 16 kennels. For April the shelter began the month with 22 dogs and ended with 16; adoptions numbered seven, owner surrenders one and 8 animals were returned to owners. Tom said staff logged seven police calls and six after‑hours calls for April. For May, the director reported the month began with 16 dogs and ended with 15; there were nine adoptions, two owner surrenders, four returns to owners and 11 police calls with nine after‑hours calls.
The commission noted recent donations and supply totals. Tom reported a FreshPak pallet of donated food and $2,736 in donated food value for April; for May Tom reported $5,141 in donated food. Supplies — including cleaning products and laundry detergent — were reported at $20,091 for April and $2,658 for May. The commission said legacy gifts and donor funds are available for facility work.
Commission members reviewed maintenance items that remain outstanding. Stall and kennel door replacements have been ordered — the commission said the final three doors were on order — and camera equipment has been inspected but installation is pending. The ceiling in the kennel area remains unrepaired; commissioners said the roof leak is intermittent and can cause mold where water has tracked through the ceiling. The commission discussed using donated money and competitive bids from local contractors to complete the shed rebuild and other repairs rather than relying solely on county maintenance, which members said is stretched thin with other projects.
The shelter reported one vacant part‑time K‑9 officer position with an application under review. Staff and commissioners discussed continuing fundraising activities, including a requested yard sale that is awaiting county approval before advertising.
