The California State Senate unanimously confirmed several of Gov. Newsom’s appointees during its morning session, approving the confirmation of Lisonbee Ganter to serve as inaugural director of the in-custody death review for the Board of State and Community Corrections and reappointments to several state boards.
The confirmations were approved by voice and roll call with an announced tally of Ayes 34, Noes 0 for file item 5 and Ayes 34, Noes 0 for the group of reappointments on file item 6. The group in file item 6 included Kim Craig and Willie Pilote for reappointment to the Cal Expo State Fair Board; Tiffany Alvidrez for reappointment to the State Lottery Commission; and Anthony Bertram, Tanya Fairley, and Yolanda Jimenez for the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
Senator Grove introduced file item 5 and described Ganter’s record at the Board of State and Community Corrections, saying Ganter “is extraordinarily qualified” and noting she began at the BSCC 24 years ago “as a field representative.” Grove urged an aye vote. Senator Choi said she would support the appointments but requested that the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology provide a timely response to a constituent inquiry about the state exam; Choi said her staff had contacted the board on May 8 and May 21 and had not yet received a reply.
The confirmed positions cover oversight roles for state programs and licensing. The Board of State and Community Corrections conducts oversight related to county corrections; the Cal Expo State Fair Board advises on the State Fair; the State Lottery Commission oversees the California State Lottery; and the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licenses and regulates barbers and cosmetologists.
No amendments or further debate were recorded on the floor for these confirmations. The secretary announced the vote totals and declared the appointments confirmed.
