Spring ISD announces MOUs and grants: university partnerships, guaranteed college admissions and mental-health vendor support

Spring Independent School District trustees heard several items Thursday tied to staffing pipelines, college access and student supports as part of the district's regular consent and grant agenda.
University of Houston MOU for teacher interns and STEM training Dr. Terrell King, chief of human resources, presented a memorandum of understanding that places University of Houston alternative-certification teacher interns in Spring ISD middle schools and provides professional development through a STEM training program for early-career middle-school STEM teachers. King said the agreement is intended to expand the district's teacher pipeline and provide training tied to STEM classroom quality.
Guaranteed admission and scholarship partnership with Houston Christian University The district presented a guaranteed-admission and scholarship agreement with Houston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University). Under the agreement, Spring ISD students with a 3.0 GPA or higher would be eligible for a scholarship package totaling approximately $96,000 over four years; students with lower GPAs would be eligible for smaller awards beginning around $64,000 over four years, staff said. The district and university will coordinate outreach and enrollment assistance, and HCU will provide regular reporting on enrollments.
ExxonMobil grant for STEM equipment Staff described a $200,000 gift from ExxonMobil to support STEM programming at four campuses. The company committed $50,000 per campus for robotics, drones and related materials; the district said funds may also be used for professional development so equipment is used in classrooms rather than stored. Trustees praised the donor and asked for metrics tying the investment to student gains.
Harris County mental-health vendor grant (School Pulse) The board reviewed a Harris County grant that will fund a mental-health vendor called School Pulse. The platform delivers short videos to students and families, offers an anonymous live chat with counselors and includes emergency escalation protocols. District staff said the platform will be promoted via QR codes, text messaging and campus campaigns; they also noted the district will coordinate messaging to reduce click-through hesitancy for parents who receive links by text.
Other partnerships - The board reviewed a reoccurring interlocal with Harris County Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP) for discretionary seats; Spring ISD purchases 10 seats for the year and receives refunds if seats go unused on any given day. Trustees discussed re-entry support and earlier pilot efforts to coordinate reentry services with JJAEP, and staff said discussions are ongoing. - Harris County youth services specialists (KICE workers) were discussed; the district funds part of the positions and receives AWARE grant funds for others. Trustees asked staff to explore connections between KICE workers and other district crisis chat or digital mental-health tools.
What happens next Most items were presented for board consideration and will appear on the June 24 consent agenda for formal approval. Trustees asked for marketing plans and implementation metrics for the university and corporate partnerships and the mental-health vendor.
