Trustees report positive Marine Corps OTC review; district to prepare cost proposals for possible program slot expansion

Trustee Park and other trustees who attended the walkthrough said the operations director provided a strong evaluation and told the district the Marine Corps will consider expanding the program and approving up to 10 new slots in October. Trustee Park said district staff (including Superintendent Tim Logan and others) will prepare proposals and that future board action will be required because implementing the program will involve district funding.
Trustees noted potential program benefits: college credit for qualified students, partial satisfaction of PE credits at the high school level and possible rank advantages for students entering military service. Several trustees praised the program’s potential for discipline, STEM alignment (cybersecurity and related offerings were mentioned) and student opportunity.
Board members asked the administration to bring forward cost estimates and clarify any guarantees from the military before the district commits funds. No formal action was taken; trustees said staff will return with proposals when details are firm enough to present for board consideration.
