Council members and staff said the city has not previously received COG funds and highlighted a sidewalk need associated with the Visionaries Subdivision and students walking to the nearby school. Staff noted COG funding commonly pays for road work (asphalt and base courses) but generally will not fund curb and gutter or standalone sidewalks; the council said the Visionaries Subdivision developer had indicated informal willingness to chip in for a connecting sidewalk from their stub street to 6 South, which would reduce the city’s scope.
Deadlines noted in the meeting: a full application is due by June 26, and applicant presentations to the COG are expected in August; projects funded through this round are tentatively for 2027. Council members said they chose to pursue the current funding cycle because COG’s funding pool is larger this year than anticipated for next year.
No formal funding award has been made; the LOI is an application step. Council requested staff and consultants continue to prepare the full application and coordinate with regional partners who will review applications.
