Franklin County adopts acceptable-use policy for generative AI in county operations

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt an acceptable-use policy for generative artificial intelligence designed to guide county staff use of AI tools in operations.
County administration staff presented the policy and said it is intended as a best-practice framework to protect public trust, preserve data privacy and mitigate risk. "Strong AI policy is a best practice, as I mentioned, to safeguard public trust, protect data and privacy, and mitigate risk to the county," said Carrie, a county administration staff member. Staff noted the policy may be revised as the county learns more about the technology.
Following a motion and second, the commissioners voted to adopt the policy. The board compared the step to earlier policies governing social media and IT equipment and said establishing parameters now will allow staff to use AI effectively and safely.
What the policy does: Presenters said the policy establishes acceptable uses and safeguards for generative AI in county operations; staff did not read the full policy language into the record during the presentation. Commissioners did not alter the document at the meeting and asked no detailed implementation questions on the record.
