Lake Forest honors AYSO Region 85 on 50th anniversary

The Lake Forest City Council recognized AYSO Region 85's 50th anniversary during the June 3 meeting, thanking volunteers, coaches and families who have participated in the program since 1975.
Ken Sipes, the city's recreation supervisor, outlined Region 85's history: he said the program began in Lake Forest (formerly El Toro) in 1975, peaked at about 3,200 players by 2002 before regioning adjustments, and has averaged roughly 2,000 players a year; Sipes estimated about 100,000 players have participated in Lake Forest since inception. He described tournaments hosted at Lake Forest Sports Park and noted the local economic benefits from visiting teams.
Councilmember Doug Servo and Region 85 Commissioner Jim Hansen thanked volunteers and staff; Servo shared his own history as a longtime volunteer and referee. The council presented a certificate of recognition to Commissioner Hansen and invited participants to come forward for a group photo.
The recognition was ceremonial; no council action was required.
