Hermosa Beach Triathlon set for Aug. 10; registration near sellout, $20 resident discount announced

The Hermosa Beach Triathlon will return on Aug. 10 with a quarter-mile swim, a nine-mile bike course and a three-mile run, Executive Producer Michael Epstein told the Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Advisory Commission on June 3.
Epstein said the race, in its 35th year, typically starts at 7 a.m. with roads reopened by about 9–9:30 a.m. to minimize community impact, and that the event already is roughly three-quarters sold out. He said the race’s sellout number is 1,000 participants.
The triathlon is followed by run events on the Strand and a post-race celebration that brings competitors and visitors into local hotels and restaurants, Epstein said. He also said the event will include a $20-off registration discount for Hermosa Beach residents; the department will mail the resident code and it should arrive two to three weeks before the event.
Epstein called out Madison, the city’s new recreation specialist, for being “on it” in coordinating with the event. Commissioners asked about participant limits and staffing; Epstein said the event regularly sells out and that one familiar challenge is recruiting police and fire personnel who often race themselves. He said he will be in person at the commission’s follow-up meeting.
