Summary
Long Beach recognized 16 businesses as newly certified or recertified under its Green Business Program; staff briefed the council on statewide environmental impact metrics tied to certified businesses.
City staff recognized 16 Long Beach businesses on June 3 for completing the Long Beach Green Business Program certification, a no-cost local program that follows standards set by the California Green Business Network.
Courtney Chadderson, who said she first launched the program in 2018 while at the Office of Sustainability and later moved it into Economic Development, introduced Alex Walzack, Green Business Program Lead. Walzack described the program’s focus on pollution prevention, waste reduction, energy efficiency, water savings, transportation and employee/community awareness. He said certified businesses receive a three-year certification and may recertify under updated standards.
Staff also supplied statewide impact figures for businesses certified across California: a cumulative reduction of 37,986 tons of greenhouse gases, 59,000,000 kilowatt hours of energy saved, 18,431 tons of waste prevented from landfills and 106,000,000 gallons of water saved. Walzack said Long Beach has 90 certified businesses since the program’s inception and that 16 businesses were recognized at the meeting.
Recognized businesses included Alder and Sage, Amartey, Creative Art Events, Bridal Movement (two locations), Root and Branch Landscapes, Urban Social Services and Advocacy, Bowman Change, Elemental Marketing, GeoSyntec Consultants, Heritage, Primal Alchemy Catering, Sacred Roots Holistic Healing, Somatic Wise, Therapy Insight Out and Wheel Fun Rentals.
Ending: The council and staff took a group photo with honorees and encouraged the community to engage with certified local businesses.
