Special Olympics Union County asks commissioners for recurring community grant support

Amanda Cotter, local coordinator for Special Olympics Union County, used the informal public‑comment period at the June 2 meeting to ask commissioners for a community grant to support athletes and program growth.
Cotter described the program’s scope: "We have just returned from the 2025 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games, where 51 delegations from across the state competed. Union County was represented by 52 athletes, 20 coaches, sport assistants, and chaperones," she said. Cotter told the board the program now serves "over 600 athletes" through year‑round sports and multi‑day spring games and runs three annual fundraisers (Polar Plunge, golf tournament and poker run).
Cotter said a county community grant would mean the program would not have to continually ask "how will we keep going" and instead could focus on expanding services. The commission recognized athlete Chloe Cole, who was introduced as a multiple medalist in gymnastics and a golfer.
There was no formal action tied to the public comment; commissioners expressed appreciation for Cotter’s volunteer work and for the athletes’ achievements.
