Wausau to stagger pool openings; Kaiser pool to stay open longest this summer

City of Wausau Parks and Recreation staff reported Monday that the city will stagger pool openings this summer so lifeguard training and lesson schedules can be concentrated while maintaining overall seasonal service.
Jamie, Parks and Recreation staff, said Memorial and Schulenburg pools will open the coming weekend; Kaiser pool will open one week later but remain open a week longer than the others and is scheduled to stay open through Sunday, Aug. 17. Jamie said Memorial will close for the season on Aug. 9 and Schulenburg on Aug. 10; Kaiser’s longer run is intended to provide an extended end‑of‑season window without increasing staff costs.
Jamie said staff held multiple lifeguard classes this spring and plan one additional class next week, which is filled with 10 candidates. Staff expect to have enough lifeguards for scheduled operations but are still recruiting a few more. Jamie said the city staggered openings to allow dedicated times for lessons and training at pools when one pool is closed for a weekday to the public.
Hours for open swim were announced as 12:15 p.m. to 7 p.m.; lessons will be scheduled in morning blocks before public hours. Jamie said the changes aim to increase swimming‑lesson capacity and training opportunities without adding net staffing costs.
