Skate park ramps delivered; multiple park improvements moving toward summer openings

City of Wausau Parks and Recreation staff updated the Parks and Recreation Committee on several capital and maintenance projects Monday, reporting that precast ramps for the new Oak Island skate park have arrived and work on phase 1 is expected to take about four weeks with a soft opening around July 1.
Jamie, Parks and Recreation staff, showed photos and said crews delivered three truckloads of precast ramp sections and used a crane to set quarter pipes in place. Work now focuses on framing and pouring the concrete pieces that must be placed in‑site; the contractor will complete phase 1 and staff will handle west‑side flat work and installation of refurbished ramps in phase 2.
Staff also reported these updates:
- Athletic Park: Clubhouse renovations are complete with new ADA restrooms, showers and updated flooring; the Woodchucks baseball team has begun play. - Alexander Airport pickleball courts: Paving is complete, fencing is under construction and the surface must cure and be painted before opening; staff said the schedule remains on track. - Brockmire Park: A water line break under concrete that affected the restroom was repaired; one minor splash‑pad feature remains isolated pending more invasive repair work. - Woodson kayak statue and 400‑block fountain: Crews identified and addressed problems; the kayak statue now operates on four of five pipes and staff are locating an internal break; a fountain activator control was installed so the fountain runs only when activated by patrons to reduce water use and expense. - Flower baskets, docks and irrigation: Staff reported installation and ongoing checks.
Why it matters: The skate‑park phase 1 completion and clubhouse ADA upgrades increase recreational access this summer. The fountain activator is intended to reduce water waste and utility costs.
Staff said they will announce a soft opening date for phase 1 of the skate park when ready and will present any additional timeline details at future meetings.
