Halifax County commissioners met June 2 and voted on a series of routine and policy items, including consent-agenda approvals, personnel policy changes, budgeting and intergovernmental project steps.
The board unanimously approved the consent agenda (minutes, budget amendments, bank authorizations, property tax collections/releases, holiday schedule and fireworks permits). The board also approved consent decisions recommended by the Board of Equalization and Review earlier in the meeting.
Separately the board adopted a resolution that amends the Halifax County personnel policy, with the changes to take effect July 1, 2025. Commissioners also voted to reappoint Shane Lynch as county assessor for a four-year term.
On economic and infrastructure actions, the board: - Approved appropriation of funds in the county’s economic development seed account ($42,204.59 balance cited in the staff report) after a public hearing. - Adopted a settlement project ordinance and a separate resolution to authorize an additional $10,000 of opioid-settlement funds for strategic planning and training; the authorization also extended that planning period through June 30, 2026. - Approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Town of Weldon to proceed jointly on preliminary engineering for a proposed Weldon water-treatment project, and separately adopted an ordinance to transfer $100,000 from the county capital reserve to the county water department to fund preliminary engineering and related legal and professional services.
Other formal votes included the approval of a Halifax County Schools lottery/repair and renovation request for $55,000 and authorization for finance to write off aged receivables (write-off figures and category line items were presented by the finance director). The board also completed dozens of board and commission appointments and reappointments during the meeting.
