Commission denies rezoning for large boat/RV storage project near Jordan Lake

The Board of Commissioners voted to deny a conditional rezoning application from Walt Lewis to expand an Extra Garage boat and RV storage facility on property near Jordan Lake.

Applicant counsel Brady Herman presented the rezoning proposal and said the conditional zoning would allow a 98‑unit covered storage facility serving boat and RV owners who visit Jordan Lake. The applicant included a proposed deceleration lane at the entrance and noted the county planning board had recommended approval. Herman said the parcel is close — approximately 0.2 miles — to a nearby boat ramp and multiple recreational amenities, and he argued the project meets the comp plan’s aims for nearby commercial uses.

Dozens of residents spoke during public comment; supporters said the facility addresses an unmet demand for secure, covered storage near the lake and can reduce long‑distance hauling on rural roads. Neighbors opposed the rezoning, saying the large storage facility would be out of character in a rural designation, would create visible commercial development on a scenic corridor and could bring more traffic along narrow roads. Some commissioners underscored the distinction between commercially zoned parcels and the board’s responsibility to weigh impacts to rural character and neighborhoods.

After deliberation a commissioner moved to deny the rezoning; the motion passed on a voice vote.
