DPA reports use-of-force audit underway and recent case activity

The Department of Police Accountability (DPA) told the Police Commission on May 21 that a use-of-force audit is underway and provided an update on case activity and complaint trends.
Executive Director Henderson reported that the audit covers the period from May 24, 2024, through March 2025. She said the DPA has opened eight new cases since the commission's last meeting and closed 27 cases. The top allegation from complainants this week involved neglect of duty, a trend the director said is consistent with the Internal Affairs quarterly report that commissioners received on the consent calendar.
Henderson said three DPA investigations have exceeded 270 days: one is under re-review for sustainability and two have draft reports in progress and are not being sustained. She said summaries and investigative material have been forwarded to SFPD, and that 94 sustained DPA cases are pending with the police chief while two are pending with the commission.
The DPA director offered contact information for people wishing to follow up on complaints and said the office had no items to bring to closed session that evening.
The commission received the report and there was no public comment on the DPA update during the meeting.
