SFPD reports year-to-date drop in crimes, highlights arrests and an off-duty officer collision

Chief William Scott told the San Francisco Police Commission on May 21 that total Part I crimes in the city are down compared with this time last year, with drops in both property and violent crimes.
"We are still tracking a significant negative in our crime from this time last year," Chief Scott said, providing year-to-date figures the department recorded during the meeting. He reported 10,284 total Part I crimes in the prior reference period versus a higher number the previous year and said property crimes dropped from 12,362 to 8,776. Violent crimes were reported at 1,508 for the year compared with 1,805 the previous year. Homicides for the year were nine compared with 12 at the same point last year, which the chief described as a 25% reduction.
Chief Scott also described recent significant arrests and investigations. He said there were no shootings during the most recent week and summarized several incidents investigators had cleared: a homicide in the 1200 block of Columbus Avenue that was cleared after a subject turned themself in; an aggravated assault at a Trader Joe's in the Central District in which a shoplifting suspect pointed a handgun at employees and was later arrested; an arrest for a stabbing in the Mission District; and an attempted robbery on Lombard Street in which officers arrested four juvenile suspects.
The chief reported that the department has seized 377 firearms year to date compared with 460 the previous year, and that ghost gun recoveries numbered 41 versus 40 the prior year.
Chief Scott also reported a traffic collision on May 17 in which an off-duty officer, identified in the department's report as 28-year-old Ryan Kwong, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury. The department said three adults in the victim vehicle were transported to a hospital, one with life-threatening injuries. The chief said the former officer is no longer a member of the department and was booked into San Francisco County Jail.
Public speakers during the chief's report urged continued attention to unsolved homicide cases. Family members of homicide victims asked for more follow-up and for the department to provide contact and investigative information. Chief Scott and other staff offered to follow up after the meeting.
The chief concluded by saying the department will continue to investigate major incidents and hold members accountable when violations occur.
