The Los Angeles City Council honored North Hollywood High School's academic team after the school placed third at this year's National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., and acknowledged the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's decades-long role as the regional competition sponsor.
Why it matters: Councilmembers said the students' achievement highlights local STEM education and the role of after-school programs and volunteer mentors in preparing students for national competition and future STEM careers.
What the council heard: Councilmember Paul Krekorian and Councilmember Nazarian recognized the students, coaches and school leaders. Principal Ricardo Rosales and coach Alter Maine were introduced; coach Maine and DWP CEO Janice Quinones addressed the chamber. Quinones thanked DWP volunteers and highlighted the program's longevity, saying DWP has sponsored the Science Bowl since 1993 and that the regional competition helps connect students to STEM pathways.
Student co-captains described the Science Bowl as a career-shaping experience. Coach Maine said the program provides opportunities for students who need more advanced outlets than typical classroom time and praised volunteer support and parental involvement.
Ending: The council presented certificates of recognition and encouraged continued support for STEM programming and partnerships between schools, utilities and city programs.
