Weber County convenes water stakeholders to tighten conservation standards, weigh enforcement and infrastructure costs

Weber County planning staff convened water providers, canal-company representatives, developers and county officials to discuss proposed updates to the water element of the Western Weber general plan, focusing on reducing outdoor water use, enforcement of landscape limits, metering, and strategies to finance needed infrastructure.

The meeting was led by Felix Yavarino of the Weber County planning office, who said the county plans to hold several stakeholder sessions and incorporate feedback into a general-plan amendment. "We'd like to have this committee — maybe 3 or 4 of these — and that should give planning department plenty of direction on where to go and what type of information we can include with our general plan," Yavarino said.

Why it matters

County planners and water-district staff said outdoor irrigation is the main driver of local municipal water demand. Weber Basin representatives described long-range regional targets and new local standards that would reduce outdoor demand and affect how new subdivisions are served. Participants debated enforcement tools, the effect on infrastructure sizing and financing, and whether to formally map zones where secondary (irrigation) service will or will not be provided.
