New bikeways.utah.gov map launched to crowdsource bike‑facility updates and show traffic stress

Bert Granberg demonstrated a newly released statewide web map, bikeways.utah.gov, at the May 28 meeting, describing its features and how local agencies can use it to update regional bike‑facility data.
Granberg said the app maintains two distinct GIS layers: on‑street bike infrastructure (cycle tracks, bike lanes, protected lanes, marked routes) mapped as attributes of roadway segments, and a separate trails and pathways dataset. The app is mobile‑first, allows users to toggle facility types, view a computed traffic‑stress level that combines vehicle speed, lane count and volumes, and click individual segments to see attributes (for example, which side of the road a lane is on).
Granberg demonstrated the app’s simple feedback form: users enter an email address and a short note; staff then review and incorporate validated updates into the dataset. He said the app was released “last week” and that UGRC is hosting the map and dataset; MPOs, UDOT and other partners will support an update cycle that includes annual outreach and ad hoc updates driven by user feedback and new aerial photography.
Granberg noted the dataset will be downloadable from UGRC’s GIS portal and that the app displays signalized intersections and pedestrian crossings from the UDOT statewide database. He said the initial public responses have already produced corrections (for example, a missing trail name and alignment adjustments) that will appear in the next data refresh.
The map is intended to help planning staff and the public see existing facilities, prioritize new investments and allow project teams to notify map stewards when completed projects (for example, newly striped bike lanes) should be added to the official dataset.
