Placer County sheriff reports summer uptick in calls; council to explore panhandling ordinance

Sergeant Toby Williams of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office updated the Colfax City Council on May 28 that the onset of warmer weather is driving an uptick in calls for service across Placer County, including transient-related issues in Colfax. Williams said deputies have worked to provide services and transport people home when appropriate and that the sheriff’s office will coordinate with city staff on potential panhandling ordinances for the summer months.
Williams also discussed local traffic concerns raised by residents, including a missing lane-marking near a tire shop on Highway 174 that has led to driver confusion at a left-turn movement. He said the sheriff’s office will coordinate with city staff and, if the problem is within state jurisdiction, with Caltrans to address striping or signage.
Council members and a member of the public thanked deputies for increased downtown presence around school release times and holiday activities. Williams said deputies will maintain visibility during school closures and other busy periods.
