Grafton School Committee elects vice chair, clerk and forms communications subcommittee

The Grafton School Committee elected a vice chair and a clerk and agreed to committee assignments and a new communications support subcommittee at its meeting. The committee approved the slate by voice votes after a short discussion and several competing nominations.

Committee members nominated and voted on officer positions. After an initial nomination that was declined, the committee moved to elect Laura Ofton as vice chair; members voted in favor by voice vote. Rebecca Filco was nominated and elected clerk; she accepted the nomination and the motion passed by voice vote. Members discussed but did not hold formal roll-call votes for committee assignments. Members confirmed or volunteered for the capital improvement planning committee, policy subcommittee, budget subcommittee, payroll/warrant signature duties, health and wellness, and negotiation subcommittee. Stella (last name per roll call: Stella Relele Leznick) and others indicated willingness to serve on policy and budget subcommittees; the chair noted she is an ex officio member of all committees.

Members proposed a communications subcommittee to support district administration with drafting and strategy — not to operate the district’s social-media accounts or publish on behalf of the district. The committee clarified the subcommittee’s role would be advisory and supportive: members said the subcommittee would draft recommendations and help plan messaging for major district items (budget materials, initiatives, event outreach), while final approval and dissemination would remain with district administration. Several committee members who work professionally in communications volunteered to participate. The committee agreed to bring a proposed structure and scope back for future consideration.

The meeting then moved into other agenda items, including a Grafton High School update, a presentation and vote on facility rental fees, and routine business.
