Council set for second reading on airport-area plan change that would allow housing in low-risk zone

City staff told the roundtable that revisions to the Airport Land Use Plan and updated safety contours opened portions of the airport-area specific plan to housing in the least restrictive safety zone (identified as "Zone 6" in staff remarks).
"Council approved the first reading of changes to the airport area specific plan to allow mixed use development in the parcel zone ... in that area," Tim Lowe said. He said the change applies to the least-restrictive safety zone (referred to in the meeting as Maintenance Zone 6) and that housing would be permitted through a conditional-use permit subject to specific findings and the overarching airport land-use plan.
Lowe said staff has already received a concept review for a project in the area and that the item will proceed to second reading on June 17, with related approvals expected to be in place by July. He characterized the change as a potential opportunity for additional housing in a location that was previously restricted for safety reasons.
No formal vote was recorded in the roundtable discussion; Lowe presented the status and schedule and invited interested parties to submit questions or concept reviews. Staff emphasized that any future project will still be guided by airport land-use requirements and the conditional-use process.
