Commission hears operations report after Mother's Day train stalled; refunds issued

Operations staff told the commission that a Mother's Day steam train failed to make the climb after wheel slip caused by over-greased rail; all affected passengers were refunded and staff described steps taken to reduce recurrence.

Sherry Bailey, executive assistant, said the commission refunded customers on the Monday after the incident and that refunds to the commission totaled $15,250. Candy Duncan (filling in for Tom) told commissioners the engine could not gain traction because the track had been over-greased and wheels were slipping; sand and a diesel assist were used but the train was returned to the depot. Candy said most passengers were understanding and the depot and staff handled passenger needs.

Operations also reported other updates: Chris of Battle Born Rail said inspections had been conducted by the Public Utilities Commission and Federal Railroad Administration and "everything looks good." The commission discussed equipment and safety steps: Chris said Battle Born Rail purchased another high-rail vehicle to serve as emergency equipment and is testing it.

Staff also reported on depot maintenance and a pending TravelNevada grant to help fund website content and portions of a rebuild (estimated vendor cost $17,725, with TravelNevada to potentially supply half). Candy said staff are preparing for Polar Express ticketing and intend to use existing seating charts to support assigned seating. Commissioners discussed the need to balance maintenance timing with the operating season and asked for engineering contracts and schedules to be returned to the commission for approval.
