Dallas commission approves Disability Pride flag raising at City Hall in July

The Dallas Commission on Disabilities voted on May 27 to recommend that city staff arrange a Disability Pride flag-raising ceremony at Dallas City Hall to take place during the month of July.

The commission’s chair, John Paul Connolly (mayor appointee, District 15), opened the vote after a brief discussion and called for commissioners to register their votes. All commissioners present voted in favor; Connolly said, “the city staff will begin the process of of the next steps moving forward.” The commission instructed staff to proceed with planning the flag-raising, which the commission said would run from July 1 through the end of the month.

The item was placed on the agenda as a recommendation to city council. Commissioners asked procedural questions about whether the item should first be a briefing item; staff and commissioners clarified that the item had been posted as a potential vote and the body proceeded. Commissioners asked whether a single flag would be raised and where; staff clarified that the plan is for one flag at Dallas City Hall for the month of July.

The motion as passed directs city staff to begin the administrative steps needed to bring a recommendation and logistics to the City Council for a Disability Pride flag raising in July, and to coordinate timing with the ADA anniversary. No additional budgetary or procurement details were finalized during the meeting.

The commission’s action was procedural and advisory: the recommendation goes to City Council for final approval and any implementation details requiring city resources or permits will be handled by staff and returned to the council if necessary.
