Council on Aging reports rising Meals on Wheels deliveries, vehicle and facility strains

Council on Aging staff reported growing demand for services and several operational challenges at the commission's May meeting.
"A total of 6,666 were delivered from January through April," the Council on Aging representative said, citing a month-by-month breakdown in meeting handouts. The program saw roughly 15% of that growth in Enoch; staff said longer and more dispersed routes there add 45 minutes to an hour per route and create volunteer strain.
Staff described a recurring water-infiltration problem in a new basement addition that warped floors and trim and required multiple repairs; an asphalt company sealed visible cracks and staff traced the source to a clogged culvert and foundation inflow. The department reported an unexpected $3,300 cost to replace the transformer for a new elevator.
Transportation is another concern. Staff said the two existing county buses used for senior centers are old, have tall, narrow steps and pose fall risks for seniors. They are discussing procuring two transit vans—one for Cedar and one for Parowan—with wider openings, lower steps and wheelchair accessibility. Fleet and staff will look at used surplus vans and options with lifts or ramps.
Other updates included newly produced newsletters, work removing large bushes near the Cedar Center entrance and plans for a senior prom on June 13 (tickets and a $10 suggested donation). Staff said they will work with fleet and county staff on vehicle procurement and with maintenance staff on a more durable floor solution for the basement.
Ending: Council on Aging staff asked for help identifying suitable, lower-step vehicles and durable flooring options and said they will return with more specific cost estimates and requests once vendors and fleet staff have had a chance to research options.
