The Town of Indian Trail's council voted unanimously to adopt a paid parental-leave policy for town employees covering both birth and adoptive parents.
Human-resources staff and council discussed the policy during the meeting. Staff said the benefit follows a trend among municipalities and local employers: examples cited by staff included Kannapolis (six weeks), Waxhaw (12 weeks) and Union County (eight weeks). The policy adopted by the council provides an eight-week paid leave period and allows the leave for both birthing and non-birthing parents; adoption documentation or a birth certificate is required to verify eligibility.
Council members and staff noted the benefit is expected to be used infrequently and that departments will plan as needed to provide coverage. The town manager said the benefit is competitive in the regional labor market and helps with employee recruitment and retention.
The council approved the policy by motion: "Motion to approve the parental leave policy," recorded in the minutes and adopted unanimously.
Ending: The policy will be administered by human resources; staff said they will provide implementation details and update the town's employee handbook as necessary.
