Superintendent spotlights spring events; students in Building America Club raise $506.04 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital

Superintendent Dr. Papalardo told the Apache Junction Unified School District Governing Board on May 20 that May had been a busy month for schools, with baccalaureate services, scholarship night, kindergarten and promotion ceremonies, and multiple graduations.
He introduced the district's new high school athletic director, Traston Yates, and then invited Jeff Strubel of the Rhino Recreation Center to present the Building America Club program. Strubel described the program as a multiweek classroom and community project that teaches leadership and entrepreneurial skills using a book-based curriculum. He said the program has run roughly eight to 10 years and culminates in student-led civic projects.
This year two groups of students ran lemonade stands as their civic project and raised $506.04. Strubel said he reached out to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation so the students could present certificates recognizing their donation; the transcript records that foundation staff provided certificates for the students. "The Rhino Recreation Center is where kids are in charge," Strubel said, describing the program's student-led focus.
Dr. Papalardo closed the report and turned the meeting to the public comment period.
