Liberty Elementary board approves pay for up to 20 hourly staff to attend ALICE safety training June 2

The Liberty Elementary School District Governing Board on May 27 voted unanimously to approve payment for up to 20 hourly staff who choose to attend a five-hour ALICE safety training session provided by the Arizona Department of Education on June 2.

Dr. Mahorn presented the item and said the department is offering the training free to the district’s administrative staff and that the district asked that office managers, secretaries and health assistants be allowed to attend for safety reasons. Office managers were already on contract and therefore would be paid; the requested board action was to permit the district to pay hourly employees who are not on contract if they choose to attend.

The training is described in the meeting as a five-hour session (with about 15 minutes before and after for sign-in and wrap-up). The district did not provide a final budget calculation at the time of the vote because hourly rates vary by position; the meeting record includes a board member’s rough estimate that if 10 hourly employees attended the cost would likely be about $1,000–$1,500. Dr. Mahorn said 20 was the maximum number that would be paid if every eligible hourly employee chose to attend, and she anticipated the actual number would likely be smaller.

A motion to approve paying approximately 20 hourly staff to attend ALICE training on June 2 carried on a roll call of 5–0. The board did not make payment amounts or a specific funding source public during the meeting.

Board members emphasized the value of consistent safety training for front-office staff who may be present during an incident. The board did not require attendance from hourly staff; the authorization applies only to those who choose to attend on that date.
