Committee authorizes up to $75,000 temporary sponsor funding for airport terminal repairs during FAA-funded renovation

The Wausau Finance Committee on May 27 approved up to $75,000 in temporary sponsor-only funding to cover unanticipated repairs discovered during an FAA-funded terminal renovation at the municipal airport.
John Schmiel, the airport representative, said contractors found water damage behind brick from a roof leak and that HVAC changes were needed as construction progressed. “The cost is $75,000 and all we're saying is, if their money doesn't come through on time, that will pay the bill until they can come through with the money,” Schmiel said. He also noted the airport typically receives reimbursement from the Federal Aviation Administration and related grant sources and that this project is funded at 95% by the FAA.
Alder Tierney moved the temporary funding authorization and Alder Henke seconded; the committee approved the motion by voice vote. Schmiel said the city has encountered similar timing issues on prior projects and has been reimbursed in the past by FAA or the Bureau of Aeronautics.
The committee voted to authorize the temporary sponsor-only funding to keep the terminal renovation on schedule while awaiting the timing of federal disbursements.
