Mayor Mark Brookover said the defect was discovered within the previous 24 hours and that the council would move the public hearing to a date in June after consulting the city attorney.
Mayor Brookover and staff said the likely rescheduled date would be June 17, subject to procedural confirmation. While the public hearing itself was adjourned, the council allowed members of the public to speak during the communications segment.
Several nearby residents and business owners opposed the project during public comment, citing traffic safety and walkability concerns. One speaker referenced the traffic impact study included in the agenda packet and said the study’s intersection data showed “80 crashes during the analysis period, resulting in a crash frequency of 16 crashes per year,” which she said exceeds the average and raised public‑safety concerns if another gas station were placed there. She argued that adding another station across from an existing station with multiple access points would worsen conflicts and increase crashes.
Doctor Greg Maxson, a property owner adjacent to the proposed Meijer development, said he opposed the project and appreciated the council’s decision to postpone the public hearing. Several residents identified themselves as Meridian Township homeowners and described substantial bicycle and pedestrian traffic through the intersection, especially near nearby schools; they said the location is valued for walkability and that another gas station would change neighborhood character.
Council made a procedural motion earlier in the meeting to adjourn the public hearing on item 5.1 and subsequently moved forward with the agenda. Staff said the item will return at a later council meeting once the notice issue is resolved.
