Commissioners reject $1.5 million property purchase proposed for Gaston County Schools

Staff identified the appraisal firm as Julian Appraisal Group.
After discussion the board’s vote failed 3–4. The clerk recorded that Commissioners Bailey, Cloninger and Kiger voted in favor but the meeting minutes and transcript did not provide a full roll-call list for every commissioner in the audio; the motion therefore did not carry. The request had been presented as a non-consent agenda item and board members asked questions about the appraisal process and whether the appraisal had been coordinated with county staff prior to submission.
The failed motion means the school system’s request did not receive county funding authorization at this meeting. County staff did not announce immediate next steps; the school board or the applicant may revisit the request at a future meeting.
