Commissioners review draft Memorial Hall lease; trustees-recreation commission agreements to be discussed next week

Pat Henderson, county counselor, briefed the Atchison County Commission on draft lease agreements for Memorial Hall and recommended two separate agreements: one between the board of county commissioners and the Memorial Hall trustees, and a second between the trustees and the Atchison Recreation Commission.

Henderson said Memorial Hall was established as a veterans memorial and that state statute requires that trustees include members whose service meets statutory criteria. He told commissioners that historically the trustees have leased the building to the Atchison Recreation Commission, which operates programs there including basketball, indoor soccer, skating and other activities.

Henderson said he had emailed draft agreements to the commissioners and that the documents were still in draft form. He recommended commissioners review the drafts and suggested the board not take immediate action. "It's a good idea that that be reviewed to make sure that it covers everything because it's a lot easier to make changes before both sides have seen it," Henderson said.

Commissioners agreed to place the lease drafts on the next meeting agenda for further review and discussion.

Ending: Henderson said he will resend the draft agreements; commissioners agreed they should review them before taking action and that the item will return next week for further consideration.
