Department of Police Accountability opens use-of-force audit; reports case counts to commission

At the May 21 meeting Executive Director Paul Henderson of the Department of Police Accountability gave a brief update on DPA activity, including an ongoing use‑of‑force audit and case statistics.
Henderson said the DPA’s use‑of‑force audit is underway and covers the period from May 24, 2024, through March 2025. He reported that DPA opened eight new cases since the commission’s last meeting and closed 27 cases in the same interval. He told the commission three investigations have exceeded 270 days; one of those is being re‑reviewed for sustainability and two are in report drafting and are not being sustained. Henderson said he had forwarded summaries and investigative material to SFPD where appropriate.
Henderson added there are currently 94 sustained DPA cases pending with the chief and two cases pending with the police commission. He provided the DPA contact path for members of the public seeking follow‑up or information: the DPA website (sfgov.org/dpa) and a telephone number, (415) 241‑7711.
Henderson concluded by saying there were no items for closed session involving the DPA at that meeting and that his staff was present in the hearing room for any issues that arose during the evening.
