Oakland Park resident urges improved park security, road repairs and Westside overlay district during public comment

Wallace Peterson, a resident of 1941 NW 30th Street, urged the Oakland Park City Commission during public comment May 21 to prioritize park security, street repairs and neighborhood protections in West Oakland Park.

Peterson told the commission he appreciated the city’s budget staff presentation and then listed specific requests: make Veterans Park security cameras functional and monitored; restore a regular park ranger presence; replace two trees removed near a bus stop on West Loyola (NW 30th) that have been missing for nearly nine years; complete the repaving of NW 30th Street that residents were promised in 2020 and that appeared in the city’s surtax paving presentation in July 2023; replace deteriorating park signage and playground surfacing; add traffic calming on 20th Avenue (a corridor Peterson said experiences high speeds); and adopt an overlay district for West Oakland Park to support neighborhood revitalization.

Peterson also said neighbors are willing to provide and plant replacement trees and that the Westside Coalition has formed a strategic plan and expects to bring further proposals to the city.

Why it matters: Peterson framed the requests as matters of public safety, neighborhood revitalization and long-delayed maintenance. Many of the items he raised — pavement projects, tree replacements and traffic-calming authority — require budgeting decisions or approvals from external agencies if jurisdictional transfer is needed.

Excerpts from public comment - "We need the security cameras in Veterans Park to be functional and monitored," Peterson said. - Peterson described two missing trees between a bus stop and the Lady Lake Trail on West Loyola that he said were removed almost nine years ago and not yet replaced. - On traffic, Peterson cited the city’s sign data and said a car a minute traverses the stretch between Oakland Park and NE 30th at speeds he described as "45 to 85 miles an hour," and he urged either taking ownership of the road to allow local traffic calming or, at minimum, adding another raised crosswalk near the bridge.

Commission response and next steps - Commissioner Budhoo asked that the city manager address Peterson’s inquiries and follow up with commissioners and staff. That request was recorded in the meeting minutes and the manager’s office was asked to respond to Peterson’s items.
