Board recognizes Youth Homes on 60th anniversary for foster‑youth services

The Board of Supervisors formally recognized Youth Homes’ 60th anniversary on May 20 and heard from Tim Burd, Youth Homes’ executive director, about the organization’s programs for foster youth and young adults.
Supervisor Ken Carlson introduced the recognition, noting Youth Homes provides community‑based mental‑health services, enrichment programming, employment development and a short‑term residential therapeutic program for youth ages roughly 12 to 17. Burd told the board the nonprofit serves more than 200 youth and families each year and supplements contract dollars with community fundraising and a thrift store that provides free items to clients and raises emergency funds for supports such as first‑and‑last‑month rent.
Supervisors and public comment recognized volunteers and community partners—the Alamo Women’s Club, Rotarians, service clubs and corporate volunteer groups—who contribute maintenance, clothing drives, equine therapy, job training and other supports. Several supervisors recalled personal ties to Youth Homes or earlier staff and praised the organization’s role in keeping at‑risk youth from homelessness and providing transitional-age services.
Ending: The board posed for a recognition photo with Youth Homes staff and volunteers and expressed continued support for nonprofit partners who provide services not fully covered by county contracts.
