Contra Costa Public Works reaccredited by American Public Works Association; county highlights staff work for week

The Board of Supervisors recognized Contra Costa County Public Works on May 20 for reaccreditation by the American Public Works Association and for National Public Works Week (May 18–24).
APWA regional director Shubin Pakpour presented the reaccreditation to Public Works leadership, saying the department achieved a 99% passing grade during the latest outside audit. Pakpour told the board that only about 20 agencies in California have APWA accreditation and that Contra Costa first earned it in 2001.
Public Works Director Warren Lai and department staff described ongoing work that county residents see only in part—road maintenance, storm‑drain clearing, facilities upkeep for more than 30 county buildings including clinics and a hospital, fleet services and emergency response. Director Lai and supervisors noted the department’s role during the COVID response and in maintaining clinics, community centers and public safety infrastructure.
Board members praised specific examples of Public Works’ support for other county departments and constituents, including capital projects, elevator modernization, HVAC replacements, roadside cleanups, and the department’s work to expand EV charging and fleet electrification planning (see the climate action article for more detail). A public comment from Contra Costa Health’s Dr. Zavelli thanked Public Works for facilities work supporting the health system.
