County schedules rehearings of two zoning appeals for July 15

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on May 20 voted unanimously to hear two appeals of recent Zoning Board of Appeals decisions and set both cases for public hearing on July 15.
The first appeal, filed by Sharon Cantrell for Case No. 20‑5‑531, requests a variance to reduce the side setback for an accessory structure (an RV carport) from 10 feet to 5 feet. Cantrell’s appeal letter said the RV is exposed to weather and takes up turnaround space in a blind driveway; she also cited alleged setback violations at the neighboring property. Staff noted ongoing code enforcement related to a neighbor’s deck.
The second appeal, Case No. 20‑5‑529, was filed by Michael Emanuello for ACME Properties and seeks a rehearing of a ZBA denial that would allow a freestanding sign to use a brick‑faced base rather than the full monument wrap required in the Highway 92 overlay. The applicant wrote that the proposed sign coordinates with the renovated building’s architecture and that enforcing the standard would prevent a cohesive design.
Commissioners said they typically accept appeals for rehearing and requested staff and applicants work to try to resolve matters before the July hearing where feasible. Both motions to hear the appeals were moved and seconded and carried unanimously. Staff indicated July 15 as the tentative public‑hearing date.
