Commissioners say Ken Smith Park parking and SR-167 safety need action after fatal crash

Following a recent fatal crash on SR-167 near Kent Smith Park, commissioners directed staff to pursue solutions with UDOT and explore parking, speed and crosswalk improvements at the heavily used park and ball fields.
Commissioner Blocker told the Morgan County Commission that a Mother's Day crash on State Route 167 near Kent Smith Park resulted in a local death and renewed urgency to address road safety and parking near the park.
Blocker said frequent overflow parking for games leaves Old Highway lined with vehicles and causes visibility and passing problems. He said residents have suggested a range of fixes, including double-yellow lines to prohibit passing, a three-way stop, lowering the speed limit, or creating additional parking. Blocker said he will follow up with the Utah Department of Transportation to explore solutions.
Other commissioners noted the county’s growing demand for ball fields and parks and urged further conversation about acquiring land or building additional fields to reduce unsafe roadside parking at game times. Commissioners requested follow-up reports on possible parking expansion, crosswalk placement and short-term traffic controls while longer-term park planning proceeds.
