Cindy, a representative of the Morgan County Historical Society, told the Morgan County Commission during a meeting that the society seeks to use revenue collected at the Morgan Depot visitor center in 2024 to restock inventory in 2025.
The Historical Society, Cindy said, operates an archive and the Morgan Depot museum, conducts oral-history projects with local veterans and longtime residents, and hosts school field trips and visiting researchers. The society received the 2024 Community Stewardship Award for the depot's rehabilitation and said it nominated the Veil Hotel in Morgan for Preservation Utah’s 12 Most Endangered list. Cindy described visitor counts (936 visitors at the depot last year and 558 so far this year) and detailed community programming including the Front Street Festival planned for May 31.
Commissioners asked about accounting and whether the revenue is already held in a restricted fund. Kate Becker, county staff, confirmed the revenue exists in a fund balance but said the expense for inventory was not budgeted for 2025, which is why a budget adjustment was needed. Commissioners expressed support for keeping the money separate and visible as a restricted fund for museum use.
Commissioner Newton moved to approve the budget change to move $6,472.61 from GL 207-729-5050 to GL 207-480-480. Commissioner Fackrell seconded the motion. The motion passed with the commissioners present responding “aye.”
The commission vote authorizes the Historical Society to purchase additional inventory for the depot gift shop in 2025 using the transferred funds. Cindy invited residents to visit the depot and to attend the Front Street Festival.
Details on the society’s longer-term digital-archiving plans and specific upcoming purchases were not specified in the meeting record.
