Board renews SRO agreement; administration outlines training and evaluation process

The Abington Board of School Directors voted June 10 to continue its agreement with the Abington Township Police Department for two School Resource Officers (SROs), one assigned to the middle school and one to the senior high school.
During discussion, administration described the training and oversight provided to SROs. ‘‘The SROs are required to have completed the, National Association of School Resource Officer Training, basic SRO course,’’ said the administration (Doctor Melkor summarized the training). Staff also said that SROs participate in district trainings including Title IX‑related topics, verbal de‑escalation, restorative practices, cultural responsiveness and trauma‑informed practices.
Board members asked who evaluates SRO performance. Administration clarified that SROs are employees of the township; however, secondary school administrative teams work with the police department and participation in annual review meetings provides school administrators the opportunity to weigh in on performance. As summarized on the record, ‘‘the Abington Township Police Department will sit with Mr. Fyle and sit with Dr. Swift and their teams and discuss the performance of the individuals.’’
