Historical Society to mark Lafayette’s 1825 visit with program at Wells Junior High on June 24

The Wells Historical Society invited the Select Board to a public re‑enactment of the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Wells scheduled for Tuesday, June 24 at 1:30 p.m. in front of Wells Junior High School.
Bryce Waldrop, director of the Historical Society, said the nonprofit Friends of Lafayette is recreating Lafayette’s national tour and will stop in Wells around the time the original visit occurred. Waldrop described the lead performer: “the gentleman who is portraying Lafayette, his name is Michael Howard…he’s fluent in French” and a longtime Lafayette reenactor. The event will include a brief speech by the portrayal of Lafayette, drums, historical impressions and cake made from a recipe said to be a favorite of Lafayette’s.
Waldrop asked that town representatives or Select Board members attend and, if available, offer a brief welcome response. The Historical Society invited residents to attend in period costume if they wish; the society said the program is family friendly and community members and historical society volunteers will participate.
No town votes were taken on the program; organizers asked the board to consider participation and to publicize the event to residents.
