Leesburg highlights LED conversions, fleet replacements and food-waste diversion

Vice Mayor Simono Johnson reported to the council on Department of Public Works achievements, including vehicle replacements, streetlight conversions and a food-waste diversion program.
Johnson said the town brought one Nissan LEAF and two Police Explorers into the fleet this year as part of the capital asset replacement program, replacing internal-combustion vehicles. He reported that 142 streetlights were converted to LED fixtures in fiscal year 2025 and that another 56 conversions are pending with fiscal-year funds, a total “of almost 200 streetlights converted to LED with fiscal year 2025 funds,” which Johnson said reduces power consumption and costs.
Johnson also said the town earned the Tree City USA Growth Award again, continuing an award streak since 1989; implemented the Recycle Coach app to provide residents recycling rules and route updates; and launched a food-waste drop-off in December 2024 that has diverted more than 5 tons of food scraps from the landfill to date. He added that this year’s budget increased funding for paving more residential streets.
