Leesburg councilmember details airport projects, airshow and control-tower progress

Council Member Martinez provided an update to the Leesburg Town Council on projects and public events at Leesburg Executive Airport, including runway work, a recent apron reconstruction funded with state and federal grants, and progress on a proposed control tower.
Martinez said the airport “serves many transportation needs, economic development needs and community needs and is rapidly becoming one of the busiest airports, certainly in the Commonwealth, if not the region.” He invited residents to aviation events, noting that “this June 28, for example, the Town and Smokehouse Pilots Club will host a fly in and pancake breakfast,” and that the annual Leesburg Airshow in September draws thousands.
The town reconstructed the airport’s terminal parking apron with what Martinez described as $4,000,000 in state and federal funding grants. He said the airport’s runway pavement, now about 20 years old, will be replaced and the town is inviting construction bids; the work will be scheduled at night to avoid disrupting daytime operations. Martinez also said the Federal Aviation Administration has approved a safety risk assessment for a proposed control tower and that the town is completing an environmental study to establish the tower’s location.
Martinez noted additional private investments at the field, including a new corporate fixed base operator (FBO) building a hangar, and said the airport will have an electric aircraft charging station as part of efforts to support emerging electric aircraft.
